What we aim for
WCAG 2.1 level AA is the standard this site is built towards. Nobody has audited it against that standard, so this page sets out what has actually been built in rather than claiming a pass mark. Where the site falls short of the aim, we would rather be told than left to assume it is fine.
How it is built
Headings run in order so a screen reader can navigate by them, and every page has one main heading. Images that carry meaning have alternative text, and the decorative layer sitting over a picture is hidden from screen readers so nothing is announced twice. Every link, button and menu can be reached and used with a keyboard alone, and whatever holds the keyboard focus is drawn with a ring around it so you can see where you are. The menus open with Enter or Space and close with Escape, and closing one puts the focus back on the item that opened it.
Getting past the menu
A skip link is the first thing the keyboard reaches on every page. Press Tab as soon as the page loads and Enter to jump straight to the main content. Nothing on the site blocks browser zoom either, so you can enlarge the text in your own browser.
Where it may fall short
The maps on this site are supplied by a third party and we cannot change how they behave from the inside. Nothing lives only inside a map, though: every suburb we work in is written out as text and as a link on the service areas page, and the phone number, email and hours are written out in the footer. A form or a reviews panel embedded from another company sits outside our control in the same way.
